Málaga and Córdoba are linked by one road, the A-45, which makes this one of the simplest inland tours from the city. The trip is about 160 km and takes roughly an hour and three quarters, with no city traffic at the other end because we stop by the river, five minutes on foot from the Mezquita. That leaves a comfortable day in Córdoba: a visit of two and a half hours, a long lunch and time on the Roman bridge before the drive back south.

If you are staying in Málaga for a few days, Córdoba is a good contrast to the coast: inland, flat and quiet in the early morning, with a very different light. Holidaymakers based in Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola can join exactly the same plan with a slightly earlier pickup, at the same price. And as the car waits for you all day, you choose when to turn south; most guests are home by early evening with time for a stroll along Málaga's Muelle Uno before dinner.

Sample schedule

  1. Collection from your Málaga accommodation (west-coast hotels a little earlier)
  2. Arrival in Córdoba; drop-off by the Roman bridge
  3. Enter the Mezquita-Catedral (with your official guide, if booked)
  4. Walk through the Judería, synagogue and Calleja de las Flores
  5. End of the visit; lunch in a traditional tavern
  6. Roman bridge, Calahorra tower or the Alcázar gardens
  7. Departure from Córdoba
  8. Drop-off in Málaga, at the door where the day began

Pickup

We collect you from your hotel or apartment in central Málaga, the Soho, the port area, La Malagueta or the eastern beaches, and anywhere along the coast to Fuengirola. The recommended departure from the city is 08:30, which puts you in Córdoba before the main tour groups arrive. From Torremolinos or Fuengirola we set off about 20 to 30 minutes earlier.

The drive

We head north on the A-45 through the Montes de Málaga and over the Las Pedrizas pass, then past Antequera with the rock of the Peña de los Enamorados to the east. The motorway continues through the olive country of Benamejí, where it crosses the Genil river, and past Lucena and the vineyards of Montilla-Moriles before descending into the Guadalquivir valley. If you fancy a break, Antequera's service areas are about halfway, and when heading home a short detour can be made for a glass of local fino.

What you'll see

  • The prayer hall of the Mezquita, with its rows of columns and striped arches
  • The mihrab and its gold Byzantine-style mosaics
  • The cathedral nave built inside the mosque in the 16th century
  • The Patio de los Naranjos, the old ablution courtyard planted with orange trees
  • Judería lanes, the medieval synagogue and the statue of Maimonides
  • The Roman bridge and the view back to the city from the Calahorra tower
  • Salmorejo and flamenquín, the two dishes Córdoba claims as its own

Frequently asked questions

Can we leave Málaga later than 08:30?

Yes, though we do not recommend leaving much later in summer, when the afternoon in Córdoba is very hot. In spring, autumn and winter a 09:00 or 09:30 start works well; we just shift the whole day by the same amount.

Could we come back by the AVE train instead?

Some guests like to travel one way by car. It is possible, but you would lose the door-to-door return and need train tickets of your own. Most find the car simpler, because there is no waiting at stations and your bags stay in the boot.

Is there time to see Antequera on the way?

A quick photo stop, yes. A proper visit to the Antequera dolmens or the Alcazaba needs roughly 90 extra minutes, which we can add at the hourly chauffeur rate when you book.
