What you'll see

  • Nasrid Palaces at your reserved time: Mexuar, Comares and the Court of the Lions
  • The Torre de la Vela in the Alcazaba, with the whole city laid out below
  • Generalife gardens, fountains and the long pool of the Patio de la Acequia
  • The Palace of Charles V, a Renaissance square wrapped around a circular courtyard
  • Albaicín lanes and the Mirador de San Nicolás facing the Alhambra
  • Lunch in a city where many bars still hand you a free tapa with each drink
  • Door-to-door Mercedes from the coast and back, with a driver on call all day

The Alhambra crowns the Sabika hill above Granada: a walled city of palaces, courtyards, towers and gardens built mostly by the Nasrid sultans between the 13th and 15th centuries. On this private Granada and Alhambra tour we drive your group from its door on the coast to the monument; should you prefer to be shown round by a Junta-licensed official guide, we book one and tie the confirmation to your reservation. Three hours is the right amount of time to see the Nasrid Palaces at your booked slot, climb the Alcazaba's watchtower, walk the Generalife gardens and step into the round courtyard of the Palace of Charles V without hurrying.

Because the car and driver belong to your group all day, the afternoon is yours to shape: head back early, stretch lunch out or rearrange the stops as you go. Some guests head down to the Albaicín for tapas in Plaza Larga; others want the Royal Chapel, where Ferdinand and Isabella lie, or a slow coffee in Plaza Bib-Rambla. Most of the old centre is closed to traffic, so your driver drops you and collects you where the walking is shortest. Granada sits at roughly 700 metres: fresher than the coast in spring and autumn, chilly on winter mornings, and properly hot in July and August.

How the day goes

Early start inland

Your driver collects you on the coast and heads for the mountains that separate Málaga from the high plains of the interior. Within half an hour the sea has gone and you are among olive groves and limestone ridges, with Sierra Nevada appearing ahead, often white in winter and spring. There is cold water in the car, and a short coffee stop can be fitted in if you ask. We plan the departure around your Nasrid Palaces slot, which is printed on the ticket and cannot be moved on the day.

Arrival at the Alhambra

The car pulls up by the entrance pavilion at the top of the hill, next to the Generalife. Should an official guide be part of your plan, this is where they join the group, check that every name on the tickets matches a passport or ID card and explain how the morning will run around your palace time; otherwise your driver points you to the gate and the audio guide desk. With only your own group, the pace adapts easily to children, older travellers or anyone who wants to stop for photographs in the gardens.

Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces and Generalife

The order depends on your slot, but the visit covers the whole complex. In the Alcazaba, the oldest part, you climb to the Torre de la Vela for the view over the Vega and the Albaicín. In the Nasrid Palaces you pass from the Hall of the Ambassadors to the twelve lions of the fountain, and an official guide, if you have added one, reads the carved inscriptions with you. The Partal's pools, the Palace of Charles V and the terraced Generalife gardens complete about three hours on foot.

Lunch in the Albaicín or around Plaza Nueva

Your driver collects you at the exit and takes you down for lunch. The Albaicín has terraces looking straight at the red walls of the Alhambra; the streets around Plaza Nueva and Calle Navas are full of tapas bars where a drink comes with a free plate. Try habas con jamón, the potato-and-offal tortilla del Sacromonte or a simple plate of local cured ham. We are happy to suggest places that suit your group and budget, and to book a table on busy days.

San Nicolás, the Royal Chapel or the Cathedral

After lunch there is time for one more stop. The Mirador de San Nicolás gives the classic view of the Alhambra against Sierra Nevada; the walk there takes you through whitewashed carmens and steep cobbled lanes. If you prefer to stay on the flat, the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral stand side by side in the centre, and the old silk market of the Alcaicería is a few steps away for tea, spices and ceramics.

Back to the coast

Late in the afternoon your driver is waiting at the agreed spot and the car is already cool. The return is the same smooth motorway, usually quieter than in the morning, and most guests doze for part of it. You are dropped back at the door of your hotel, villa or apartment, roughly nine and a half hours after leaving it. If you would like to finish at a restaurant on the coast instead, just say so in the morning.

Optional official guide

No guide is built into the price. Should you want one, we book an official guide (Junta de Andalucía licence) for roughly three hours inside the Alhambra: Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces (Mexuar, Comares, Palace of the Lions), Partal, Charles V's palace and the Generalife. The fee comes as a separate line, confirmed at the same time as the car, so you know availability and cost before saying yes. Guiding in English or Spanish is always possible; other languages depend on who is free. Prefer to go alone? The official audio guide works well, and your driver shares practical advice, although Andalusian law stops him explaining anything inside.

Tickets

Alhambra tickets are issued in each visitor's name, with the passport or ID number, and you must carry that document on the day. The ticket gives a fixed time for the Nasrid Palaces. In spring, summer and around holidays they can sell out weeks or even months ahead, so book as early as you can. Reselling Alhambra tickets is prohibited: we help you buy them at the official price with no mark-up, or you purchase them yourself and let us know the palace time.

Good to know

  • Wear comfortable shoes with grip: the visit is about three hours on foot, partly on gravel paths and old stone floors.
  • From June to September the Alcazaba has very little shade. Bring a hat and sun cream; we keep water in the car.
  • Every visitor needs the original passport or ID card used on the ticket, children included.
  • Winter mornings in Granada can be close to freezing even when the coast is mild, so pack a warm layer.
  • If anyone in the group uses a wheelchair or struggles with steps, mention it when reserving and we prepare an accessible route, with the driver dropping you as close as possible; the Albaicín is steep and cobbled.
  • Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; in midsummer an early palace slot makes the day much easier.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if Alhambra tickets are sold out for our date?

We still go, with a plan B: the outer walls and the Alhambra woods, the Albaicín, the Mirador de San Nicolás, the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral, with your official guide if you have hired one. It is a full and rewarding day. We cannot promise Alhambra tickets, so we always tell you the situation before you confirm.

Why do you need everyone's passport details?

Alhambra tickets are personal. Each one carries the visitor's name and passport or ID number, and staff may check the document at the entrance or the palace door. If a detail is wrong, that person can be refused entry, so please double-check spellings when you send them.

Is three hours inside the Alhambra really enough?

For most visitors, yes. Three hours is enough to see the Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces, the Palace of Charles V and the Generalife at a relaxed walking pace, with or without a guide. Keen photographers or architecture lovers sometimes stay a little longer in the gardens on their own afterwards, which we can fit around lunch.

Can we change the order of the day?

Within reason, yes. The fixed point is your Nasrid Palaces time; everything else moves around it. With an early slot you can do the Albaicín after lunch, with a late one you can start in the centre and go up to the Alhambra later. Tell us your preferences when booking.

Is this tour suitable for young children?

Yes. Children often love the fountains, the towers and the lion courtyard, and a private group means you can stop whenever they need a break. Ask in advance and we fit child seats free of charge. Children also need a named ticket and should carry their passport or ID card.
