What you'll see

  • Cross the frontier on foot from La Línea into Gibraltar
  • Meet the Barbary macaques at the Apes' Den on the Upper Rock
  • Walk into St Michael's Cave with its lit limestone halls
  • Explore the Great Siege Tunnels dug by hand in the 1780s
  • Look over the Strait to Africa from the Pillars of Hercules viewpoint
  • Wander Main Street, Casemates Square and the Trafalgar Cemetery

Gibraltar is a strange and rewarding place to visit from the Costa del Sol. Within a few minutes' walk of a Spanish border town, the shop signs switch to English, the post boxes are red, prices appear in pounds and the limestone mass of the Rock rises more than 400 metres straight above the streets. From its upper slopes you look across the Strait to the mountains of Morocco. It is also one of the few places in Europe where you can watch wild monkeys.

The easiest way to visit is the way locals do: drive to La Línea, leave the car in Spain and cross on foot. Your driver parks and waits while you spend the day inside. Up on the Rock, a licensed Gibraltar tour operator, which we book for you and you pay there, takes you round the nature reserve by minibus. The rest of the time is yours for the town, a pub lunch and some tax-free shopping.

How the day goes

Motorway west to La Línea

Your driver takes the coast motorway west past Marbella and Estepona; tolls are included. Beyond Sotogrande the Rock comes into view, and on clear mornings the Rif mountains of Morocco line the horizon. The car is parked at La Línea, close to the frontier, and the driver walks you to the crossing and explains where to meet on the way back.

Across the frontier on foot

Crossing takes a few minutes on foot. A short walk along Winston Churchill Avenue, or a local bus, brings you into the town centre. Your Rock tour operator meets you at an agreed point near the frontier or in Casemates Square, depending on the company and the time of your booking. Signs switch to English, prices to pounds, and the change is immediate.

The Upper Rock with a licensed operator

The tour runs by minibus or taxi through the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, stopping at the Pillars of Hercules viewpoint, St Michael's Cave and the Apes' Den, where the macaques sit on walls and car roofs. Most tours also include the Great Siege Tunnels, cut by British soldiers to fire on the Spanish lines below. Expect to be out for roughly an hour and a half.

Main Street and Casemates

Back in town, Main Street runs from Casemates Square past the Convent, the Governor's residence where a ceremonial guard stands, and the King's Chapel. Turn off for the quiet Trafalgar Cemetery, where sailors from the 1805 battle are buried, or the Alameda botanic gardens. Lunch might be fish and chips, a pie in a pub, or tapas: Gibraltar happily mixes both.

Shopping and the walk back

Gibraltar has no VAT, so perfume, spirits, electronics and tobacco are cheaper, although Spanish customs limits apply when you return. When you are ready, walk back across the frontier to the car park, where your driver is waiting with cold water and air conditioning for the drive home. If you crossed with heavy bags, the driver loads them so you can rest straight away.

Your guide

No Andalusian guide is involved here, because Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and has its own rules. The visit of the Rock is done by a licensed Gibraltar tour operator, the only way to drive up into the nature reserve. We reserve the tour for your group's size and time, and you pay the operator directly there. Their drivers know the Rock well and explain its military history, the siege tunnels and the macaques. Your own driver stays in Spain with the car.

Tickets

The Rock tour is reserved by us and paid locally to the Gibraltar operator, usually including entry to St Michael's Cave and the nature reserve; check what is covered when you book. The cable car and attractions such as the Moorish Castle or Skywalk may be separate. The Gibraltar pound and sterling are used, and most shops and restaurants accept euros and cards, though change often comes in pounds. Bring your passport, or national ID card if you are an EU citizen.

Good to know

  • Carry your passport or EU ID card; frontier arrangements changed in July 2026 with the new EU-UK agreement, and we confirm the current rules when you book.
  • Never feed or touch the macaques, and keep bags zipped and food out of sight; they are wild and quick.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the tunnels and cave paths are uneven and Main Street is long.
  • Bring a light windbreaker, as the Levante wind can make the Upper Rock cool even in summer.
  • Use a card for purchases, or ask for change in euros if you do not want to bring pounds home.
  • Spanish customs allowances apply to tobacco and alcohol when you walk back across.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a passport to visit Gibraltar?

Yes, bring a passport, or a national ID card if you are an EU citizen. Routine checks at the land frontier were lifted in July 2026 under the EU-UK agreement, but you still need valid identity documents, and we confirm the current rules with you before the trip.

Why does the car stay in Spain?

Driving into Gibraltar means queuing in traffic and hunting for scarce parking in a very small town, and private cars cannot drive up into the nature reserve anyway. Walking across is faster, and the Rock tour minibus does the climbing.

Will an official Andalusian guide come with us?

No. Gibraltar is outside Andalusia, and the Rock is shown by licensed local operators. We book one for you; you pay them there. Your driver helps with logistics, not commentary.

Are the macaques dangerous?

They are wild animals, not pets, but they rarely cause trouble if you keep your distance, do not feed them and keep bags closed. Children should stay close to adults at the Apes' Den.

Can we go up the cable car instead of the minibus tour?

Yes, the cable car to the top station is an alternative, followed by walking down through the reserve. It is more strenuous and needs a separate ticket, so tell us and we will plan the timing.
