Marbella is the natural base for a trip to Gibraltar. At around 75 km, you reach La Línea in about 55 minutes, which leaves more than six of the eight hours for Gibraltar itself. That extra time opens options that are hard to fit in from Málaga: the cable car, the Moorish Castle, Europa Point at the southern tip, or a slow lunch by the water at Catalan Bay. Most guests use it well.

Many guests in Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía have seen the Rock on the horizon all holiday. Going there with your own driver avoids the frontier car parks, where queues form on busy days, and you choose when to come home. It is also the easiest way to come back laden with shopping, since everything goes straight into the boot and you never carry bags further than the frontier.

Sample schedule

  1. Collection in Marbella or Banús
  2. Park at La Línea and cross on foot
  3. Rock tour with your licensed Gibraltar operator
  4. Europa Point or the cable car, your choice
  5. Lunch at Casemates Square or Ocean Village
  6. Main Street, the Convent and the King's Chapel
  7. Last purchases and walk back to Spain
  8. Drive home along the AP-7
  9. Home again in Marbella

Pickup

We collect from homes and hotels all along the Marbella stretch, from San Pedro and Banús to the Golden Mile and Los Monteros, and up in Benahavís too. Leaving at 09:00 is ideal: no early alarm, and you are at the frontier before 10:00. In San Pedro, the closest point to Gibraltar, we may come by a few minutes later.

The drive

The car joins the tolled AP-7 westbound, past Estepona's long seafront and the hills of Casares, then along the A-7 by Sotogrande and San Roque to La Línea. There is little traffic once past San Pedro. The best photo stop is the viewpoint area on the approach to San Roque, from where the whole Bay of Gibraltar and the Rock open up in front of you. It is an easy, short run.

What you'll see

  • Cross the frontier on foot from La Línea into Gibraltar
  • Meet the Barbary macaques at the Apes' Den on the Upper Rock
  • Walk into St Michael's Cave with its lit limestone halls
  • Explore the Great Siege Tunnels dug by hand in the 1780s
  • Look over the Strait to Africa from the Pillars of Hercules viewpoint
  • Wander Main Street, Casemates Square and the Trafalgar Cemetery

Frequently asked questions

Is a full eight hours too long from Marbella?

Not if you enjoy Gibraltar, but if you prefer a shorter outing, tell us when you book. We can plan a lighter day, and the hourly chauffeur service may then work out cheaper.

Can the driver take us into Gibraltar by car?

We park in Spain because Gibraltar's streets are congested and parking is very limited, and the Rock tour handles the climb. Crossing on foot is the quicker option.

Can we visit Sotogrande on the way back?

Yes. Sotogrande's marina is a few minutes off the route, a calm place for an early dinner, and fits if you leave Gibraltar slightly earlier or add an extra hour.
