Private Gibraltar Day Trip from Malaga
Gibraltar is about 135 km from Málaga, the whole length of the western Costa del Sol, so this is a full day with an early start and a relaxed afternoon on Main Street.
From Málaga city, Torremolinos or Fuengirola, the drive to La Línea takes around 1 h 40 each way, nearly all of it on the AP-7 toll motorway, which is quicker and quieter than the old coast road. Out of eight hours, a little under three and a half are on the road, leaving four and a half to cross the frontier, tour the Rock and explore the town. The motorway is fast and rarely busy outside August weekends.
Public buses from Málaga to La Línea exist but are slow and do not drop you near the crossing at a convenient time. A private car means you leave when it suits you, nap on the way back and avoid the parking queues at the frontier, where your driver already knows the routine. He is at your disposal for the full eight hours, so if Gibraltar wins you over, you simply stay longer and add the time. On the way home most people doze while the driver handles the evening traffic around Marbella.

Pickup
Collection is from your door in Málaga's historic centre, El Palo, Torremolinos, Benalmádena or anywhere else up to Fuengirola. A departure at 08:00 puts you in Gibraltar before the cruise ships' passengers and the day-trip coaches arrive. If you prefer to sleep later, 08:30 still works, with a shorter afternoon on Main Street.
The drive
The car runs west along the AP-7 toll motorway, high above Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona, then on the A-7 past Sotogrande and San Roque before turning down to La Línea. The Rock appears suddenly after a bend near Sotogrande. Halfway there is a service area above Marbella for a coffee, and on the way back, if you have time, the marina at Sotogrande is a pleasant 20-minute stop.

Frequently asked questions
Isn't Gibraltar too far for a day from Málaga?
It is one of our longer trips, but 1 h 40 of motorway each way is comfortable in a Mercedes. Most guests find the day well balanced, with plenty of time in Gibraltar itself.
Are the AP-7 tolls included?
Yes. Tolls, fuel and parking in La Línea are all part of the vehicle price, so there is nothing extra to pay along the way.
Can we stop in Puerto Banús on the way home?
Yes, it is right on the route. A stop of an hour fits if you leave Gibraltar a little earlier, or you can add time at the hourly chauffeur rate.
