Day trips from Málaga

Private day trips from Málaga with a driver at your disposal

Málaga is the best-placed base on the Costa del Sol for seeing inland Andalusia: main roads leave it to the north, east and west, and all ten of our private tours can start from your front door here.

Stay in Málaga city, Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola and you are sitting on the main road junction of southern Andalusia. The A-45 climbs north over the hills towards Antequera, where the routes to Granada, Córdoba and Seville part ways. The A-7 runs east beneath the Axarquía hills to Nerja. The A-357 follows the Guadalhorce valley inland towards the Caminito del Rey and, further on, Ronda. Few places on this coast let you choose so freely, and it is the reason anything to the north or east is a shorter drive from here than from the resorts further west.

You book the vehicle, not a seat: a Mercedes E-Class for up to three of you or a V-Class for up to seven, driven by one of our own chauffeurs. The car and driver stay with you from door to door, and if you want a guide accredited by the regional government inside the monuments, we can add one on request. What follows is what we would tell a friend who asked which trips are worth doing from Málaga, and which ones need an early alarm.

Pick-up areas and departure times

We collect from hotels, rented flats and private houses across the eastern half of the Costa del Sol, and the price of each tour does not change with the address. In Málaga's historic centre many streets are closed to traffic, so the driver waits at the closest corner a car is allowed to reach and we send you that spot the evening before. Along the seafront districts and in the resort towns the car pulls up outside the building.

Departure times are a suggestion until we confirm. As a rule, the long days to Seville, Córdoba and Granada start at around 08:00, with Granada fixed by the hour printed on your Nasrid Palaces tickets. Ronda and the white villages are comfortable with an 08:30 or 09:00 start. Nerja, the Caminito and the Marbella and Mijas outing can begin later, which suits anyone who landed the night before.

  • Málaga city: historic centre, Soho, La Malagueta, Pedregalejo and El Palo
  • Torremolinos, including La Carihuela and Playamar
  • Benalmádena: the seafront, Arroyo de la Miel and the Pueblo
  • Fuengirola, Los Boliches and Mijas Costa
  • East of the city (Rincón de la Victoria, the Axarquía, Nerja): on request, with a quote

Which trips suit Málaga best

Nerja and Frigiliana is the obvious one: about 50 minutes along the coast motorway, against 1 h 15 from Marbella. It is a six-hour outing, and at €390 for the saloon it is also the gentlest way to try a private tour. The Caminito del Rey is about an hour up the Guadalhorce valley, close enough that an early entry slot does not mean a brutal wake-up.

Granada and the Alhambra takes about 1 h 30 from Málaga, half an hour less each way than from Marbella, and that saved hour goes straight into the Albaicín or a longer lunch. Córdoba is about 1 h 45 on a quiet motorway through olive country; from here it is a full day, not a punishing one. Seville is the longest drive at around 2 h 15, and we will not pretend otherwise: a day of ten and a half hours from your door and back, worth it for the Alcázar and the Cathedral, but not the day after a late flight.

Ronda is about 1 h 25 and the white villages of Setenil, Zahara and Grazalema about 1 h 45; both lie nearer to Marbella, yet they are perfectly reasonable from Málaga, as is the Ronda wineries day. Gibraltar, at about 1 h 40, is the one trip where guests staying here give something away to those further west. The five-hour loop through Marbella, Puerto Banús and Mijas starts only from this side, about 45 minutes away.

Choosing by season, weather and travelling companions

Summer changes the map. In July and August Seville and Córdoba bake by early afternoon, so we either start earlier or steer people towards Ronda, which sits high and catches a breeze, or towards Nerja, where the cave stays cool and a swim afterwards is an option. Spring and autumn are when the inland cities are at their best, and also when Alhambra tickets disappear soonest.

On a wet day, pick places with a roof: the Mezquita in Córdoba, Seville Cathedral, the Nerja cave. The Caminito del Rey can close in strong wind or heavy rain, a decision its managers take on the day, and the white villages lose much of their appeal under low cloud.

With small children, keep the driving short. Nerja and Frigiliana or the Marbella and Mijas loop mean under an hour in the car each way, and child seats are fitted free when you ask. The Caminito does not admit under-eights. Teenagers generally cope well with Granada, especially if a guide has been booked and knows they are coming. For anyone who tires on slopes, Córdoba is the flattest of the big cities.

What the day looks like, door to door

The driver messages you a few minutes ahead of the agreed time. Bring a jacket for the hills and leave whatever you do not want to carry in the boot. On the longer runs there is normally a coffee stop around the halfway mark; say so if you would rather push on. At the destination the driver drops you as near the monument as traffic rules permit, introduces you to the guide if you have booked one, and goes off to park.

After the visit the hours are yours: lunch where you fancy, a wander, some shopping. You agree a collection spot and hour with the driver, and can change it by message. The run back to Málaga usually meets evening traffic on the ring road, which the tour length already allows for. You are left at the door you started from, and that is the moment to pay the driver, by card or in cash.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best day trip from Málaga if we only have one free day?

It depends on what you came for. For a single great monument, choose Granada: the Alhambra is about 1 h 30 away and nothing else in the south matches it, provided tickets are available. For scenery and an easier pace, Ronda. To keep things short and be back for a swim, Nerja and Frigiliana.

Can you collect us from the airport or the railway station instead of a hotel?

Yes. María Zambrano station and Málaga airport both lie inside our normal pick-up area, so the tour price is unchanged. Give us the train or flight number and the number of suitcases, and we will send a car with enough boot space. The bags stay locked in the vehicle during the visit.

We are staying in Torremolinos or Benalmádena. Does the tour cost more?

No. The price shown is for the vehicle and applies from any address on the coast as far west as Marbella. The only thing that shifts is the clock: for destinations to the north or east we collect you a little earlier than a guest in Málaga city, and for Ronda or Gibraltar a little later.

Is Seville too far for a day trip from Málaga?

It is far, not too far. The drive is around 2 h 15 each way and the whole outing runs to roughly ten hours and a half, with three and a half of them set aside for the Alcázar and the Cathedral. If that sounds heavy, Córdoba gives you a great monument with half an hour less driving in each direction.

Can we combine two destinations in one day?

Small additions work inside the tour's hours: Frigiliana already comes paired with Nerja, and a short stop in Antequera fits on the way home from Córdoba or Granada. Two major cities on the same day do not work; you would see both badly. Anything that lengthens the day is billed at the hourly chauffeur rate.
