Private Nerja and Frigiliana Tour from Malaga
From Málaga, Nerja is barely 50 minutes away, which makes this the easiest day out on the eastern coast and leaves an unhurried lunch by the sea.
Staying in Málaga city, Torremolinos or Benalmádena puts you on the right side of the province for this tour. Around 55 km separate the centre of Málaga from Nerja, almost all of it on a fast motorway, so the driving takes less than two hours of your six. That leaves time for the cave, a morning among Frigiliana's lanes and Nerja's clifftop promenade, and still a proper sit-down lunch before heading home.
It also suits travellers who want a gentler day. Unlike the long runs to Granada or Seville, nobody needs to be up at dawn, and children rarely have time to get restless in the car. Families often pair it with a beach afternoon on the way back. The short drive also keeps things flexible: if a child is tired after the cave, it is easy to swap the order, cut a stop short or head straight for the sand. The car and driver are yours for the whole outing, so nothing is lost by changing course.
Sample schedule
- Pick-up at your hotel in Málaga, Torremolinos or Benalmádena

- Walk through Frigiliana's Moorish quarter
- Back down to Nerja's old centre
- Visit continues at the Balcón de Europa

Pickup
Pick-up is from your hotel or apartment anywhere between Málaga city and Fuengirola, including Torremolinos, Benalmádena and the Soho or Malagueta districts. A 09:00 departure works well: it reaches the cave soon after it opens, before the coach groups arrive. If you are staying further west in Fuengirola, we may suggest 08:45, which we confirm with you when booking.
The drive
The drive follows the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo east, skirting Rincón de la Victoria and the coastal strip of Vélez-Málaga, with the sea visible between the headlands. At Torrox the road crosses deep valleys on high viaducts and the mountains close in. Exiting at Nerja, the cave is just beyond the town at Maro. On the way back, an easy stop is the watchtower viewpoint near El Cantal in Rincón de la Victoria, or a coffee in Torre del Mar's seafront promenade.

Frequently asked questions
Can we leave later and skip the early start?
Yes, a 10:00 departure is fine outside the busiest weeks. The cave queues lengthen in the late morning in summer, so in July and August we recommend sticking with 09:00.
Is it worth stopping in Torre del Mar on the way?
If you like long beach promenades, yes. It adds about half an hour, which comes out of lunch or free time within the six hours, or can be added as extra time.
How far is Nerja from Málaga?
About 55 km, roughly 50 minutes each way by motorway in normal traffic. On summer Sunday evenings the A-7 can slow down near Málaga, so we may adjust the return time.
