Cruise passengers often find Málaga's own sights crowded with other guests from the ship. Heading east to Nerja and Frigiliana trades that for a quieter coastline, a village that still feels lived in and a cave unlike anything you will see elsewhere on the itinerary. Distance is short, about 57 km from the terminal, so the risk to your all-aboard time is low. The ride is short enough that a swim before heading back to the quay is realistic.

Your driver is on the quay as you disembark, and the day follows your call times rather than a fixed coach programme. If your ship arrives late or leaves early, we simply trim the stops. The driver is yours for the whole call, so you can also cut a stop short or stay longer at another. Small groups, families with older relatives and passengers who already know Málaga from earlier cruises tend to enjoy it most, because the pace is gentle and every stop is close to the car.

Fitting it into your port call

Ships usually dock in Málaga by 08:00 or so and head off again later in the day, typically 17:00 or 18:00. This tour lasts about six hours, so leaving the port at 08:30 brings you back around 14:30, comfortably before the 60-minute margin we always keep ahead of all-aboard. With an earlier departure, say 14:00 all aboard, we shorten lunch and still return in time. We follow your ship's schedule, and if the call in Málaga is cancelled, you are not charged anything.

Sample schedule

  1. Driver greets you on the quay outside the terminal
  2. Arrive in Frigiliana, walk the village while it is cool
  3. Drive down to Nerja and the Balcón de Europa
  4. Visit of the promenade and old centre
  5. Short hop to the cave for your entry slot
  6. Lunch at Maro or Burriana beach
  7. Depart for Málaga
  8. Drop-off back at your ship's terminal

Pickup

We meet you as you leave the cruise terminal on the Muelle de Levante, whether your ship berths at Terminal A or B; a reserved car park for licensed private hire cars sits next to the main terminal, so there is no walk to a taxi rank. Smaller ships use the Palmeral quay near the city centre, and we meet you there instead. Most passengers are ready around 08:30.

The drive

From the port the car joins the coastal road out of Málaga and the A-7 east within minutes, avoiding the old town completely. The motorway runs hugging the shore by Torre del Mar, with the cliffs of the Maro-Cerro Gordo protected area ahead. On the return, the view back over Málaga bay and your ship from the motorway near El Palo is worth a photo. Traffic out of the port is usually light at that hour.

What you'll see

  • Walk the Cueva de Nerja's chambers of stalactites and stalagmites
  • Stand on the Balcón de Europa above the Calahonda cove
  • Climb Frigiliana's cobbled Mudéjar quarter, guide optional
  • Read the ceramic panels that recount the 1569 Morisco revolt
  • Taste sugar-cane honey, a local speciality, poured over fried aubergine
  • Glimpse the four-tier Eagle Aqueduct on the road to Maro

Frequently asked questions

And if our ship is delayed?

We track your ship, and the driver waits for you. If you come ashore later, we shorten the stops so the 60-minute margin before all aboard stays untouched.

Can we buy local souvenirs to take back on board?

Yes. Frigiliana's shops sell sugar-cane honey, ceramics and almond sweets, and the driver keeps purchases safely in the locked car while you continue the visit.

Is this shore excursion suitable with an 8-hour port call?

Yes. With six hours of touring and a 50-minute drive each way, an eight-hour call leaves a comfortable buffer, which is why it is one of our most popular choices for cruise guests.
