Seville is the longest day trip we offer from Marbella, about 210 km, or two and a half hours of driving in each direction, and it is worth every kilometre. The interesting part is the route: rather than the coastal motorway, we normally go straight inland over the Serranía de Ronda, which is shorter and far more scenic. You start the day among pine-covered mountains and finish it among the palaces of Seville, and start straight away with the Real Alcázar, an official guide standing by if you have booked one.

With five hours of driving in the day, we keep Seville focused: the Alcázar and Cathedral, a good lunch and a short look at the Plaza de España. Should you want more, add an hour or two when you book; and if the group flags, the car is right there to take you home sooner. In spring the verges of the mountain road are bright with wild flowers, and the drive itself becomes part of the day.

Pickup

Our cars come to every corner of the Marbella area, from the old town and the Golden Mile to Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía, San Pedro and the eastern beaches up to Cabopino. For Seville the departure is usually around 07:45, slightly later from San Pedro, which sits at the foot of the mountain road. Give us the villa or hotel name and your driver will be outside on time.

The drive

From San Pedro de Alcántara we climb the A-397, a well-engineered mountain road with wide curves and views back over the coast, to Ronda. Bypassing the town, we continue north-west on the A-374 and the A-376 through Montellano and Utrera, across the gentle farmland of the Seville countryside, and reach the city by its southern ring road. If anyone is prone to car sickness, tell us: the driver takes the curves gently, or we can use the longer motorway route via Málaga instead.

What you'll see

  • The Mudéjar palace of Pedro I in the Alcázar, with the Courtyard of the Maidens
  • The gilded dome of the Hall of the Ambassadors
  • The Alcázar gardens, from the Mercury pool to the vaulted baths
  • Seville Cathedral, its gold altarpiece and the tomb of Christopher Columbus
  • The ramps of the Giralda, climbed on foot for a view over the rooftops
  • Barrio de Santa Cruz, Callejón del Agua and Plaza de Doña Elvira
  • The tiled benches and canal of the Plaza de España

Frequently asked questions

Is the mountain road to Ronda safe in a car?

Yes. The A-397 is a modern, wide road with good surfacing and crash barriers, used by buses every day. Our drivers know it well. It is curvy for about 45 minutes, so if anyone feels car-sick easily we suggest sitting at the front or taking the longer motorway route.

Can we stop in Ronda on the way?

A short photo stop at the Puente Nuevo is possible but tight. A proper visit to Ronda needs its own day; we offer it as a separate tour. Alternatively, add a couple of hours to the Seville day and stop on the way back.

We are a group of nine. What happens?

For more than seven people we send two vehicles, for example a V-Class and an E-Class, travelling together and sharing one official guide in Seville if you book one. The cars drive in convoy and arrive at the same time.
