Guests in Marbella, Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía are about 100 km from the gorge. Rather than going round by Málaga, we usually take the inland road through Ojén and Coín, which climbs over the Sierra Blanca foothills and joins the Guadalhorce valley, a welcome change from the motorway views of the coast. The road is well surfaced and quiet, and it avoids the morning queues around the airport junctions near Málaga.

Because the drive is a little longer than from Málaga, an early start helps, especially from June to September when you want to be on the walkway before the heat builds. The six hours still cover the drop-off, the whole route at your ticket time and the pick-up at El Chorro, with you back at your villa by early afternoon. Since the car is yours all day, you could just as easily finish with lunch in Álora or a coffee in Ojén instead.

Sample schedule

  1. Driver at your door on the Marbella side
  2. Arrive at the north access by the reservoirs
  3. Access walk through the pine wood and tunnel
  4. Collect helmets and start the walkway
  5. Through the Valle del Hoyo, Los Gaitanes ahead
  6. Finish at El Chorro, your driver is waiting
  7. Drive back via the A-357 and the A-355
  8. Drop-off at your hotel or villa

Pickup

Pick-ups cover San Pedro de Alcántara, Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía, the Golden Mile, Marbella town and the urbanisations towards Elviria. We suggest leaving around 07:45 for a mid-morning slot. Houses in the hills of La Zagaleta or El Madroñal may need a few minutes more; we confirm everything once your Caminito time is booked.

The drive

The car heads north from Marbella on the A-355, past the white village of Ojén and through the pine-covered pass to Coín, then joins the A-357 near Cártama to follow the Guadalhorce valley past Pizarra. The final stretch winds up to the Ardales reservoirs. If you would like a stop, Ojén's mirador over the coast is just off the road and makes a good first coffee on the way back.

What you'll see

  • Walk the boardwalk high above the Guadalhorce in the Gaitanes gorge
  • Look down on the old concrete path still clinging to the rock
  • Cross the hanging bridge over the river near the end of the route
  • Rest in the open Valle del Hoyo between the two canyons
  • Spot griffon vultures riding the thermals above the cliffs
  • See the turquoise reservoirs around Ardales on the way in

Frequently asked questions

Is the inland road via Coín safe for a large van?

Yes. The A-355 is a modern road, and our Mercedes V-Class uses it every week. It is simply quieter and more scenic than the coastal motorway.

Can we combine the Caminito with lunch in Ronda?

It is possible as a longer custom day, with extra hours at the chauffeur rate, because Ronda is about an hour beyond the gorge. We would plan it around an early Caminito slot.

What should we leave in the car?

Anything you will not need on the walk: spare clothes, shopping, larger bags. The driver keeps the car locked while you walk and has it with him at El Chorro.
