Most shore excursions from Málaga are about monuments. This one is about the landscape: a walk along the side of a gorge an hour inland, with vultures overhead and the river far below. From the cruise terminal it is about 63 km to the north entrance, so the logistics are similar to a day in Ronda, but with far more fresh air. Bring a small daypack: everything else stays in the locked car.

The key is the ticket time. We help you book a slot that fits your ship, and the driver times the drop-off and collection around it. You walk; we keep an eye on the clock. If the slot changes or your ship is late in, we adjust the drop-off so the day keeps its shape and you are never rushing on the boardwalk. The driver remains at your service throughout the call, so a detour or a shorter day is always possible.

Fitting it into your port call

On a standard call, docking around 08:00 and sailing late in the afternoon, a start at 08:30 puts you on the walkway around 10:00 and returns you to the quay at roughly 14:30. The ticket slot is the one fixed point, so we pick it with your all-aboard time in mind and keep our rule of being back an hour before boarding at the latest. Ships leaving at 14:00 or earlier do not leave room for this tour. We watch your ship's schedule, and a cancelled Málaga call costs you nothing.

Sample schedule

  1. Off the ship and into the car
  2. Drop-off by the Ardales reservoirs
  3. Access path towards the entrance gate
  4. Helmets on and onto the walkway at your slot
  5. Valle del Hoyo, the halfway point
  6. Exit at El Chorro, the car is waiting
  7. Depart for Málaga port
  8. On the quay, ready to board

Pickup

Whichever quay your ship uses, the driver is there when you step off. On the Muelle de Levante, where Terminals A and B are, the car waits in the private-hire parking area of the main terminal, a few steps from the exit; at the Palmeral, used by smaller ships, it waits close to where you come ashore. Come off wearing your walking shoes and you save a stop.

The drive

The car leaves the port by the city ring road and takes the A-357 inland, through the Guadalhorce valley's citrus groves, with the small town of Álora and its Moorish castle off to one side. Near Ardales the road climbs to the reservoirs and the north access. The return from El Chorro runs back down the same valley, with Málaga's bay and the cruise terminals coming into view near the city.

What you'll see

  • Walk the boardwalk high above the Guadalhorce in the Gaitanes gorge
  • Look down on the old concrete path still clinging to the rock
  • Cross the hanging bridge over the river near the end of the route
  • Rest in the open Valle del Hoyo between the two canyons
  • Spot griffon vultures riding the thermals above the cliffs
  • See the turquoise reservoirs around Ardales on the way in

Frequently asked questions

Will we get back to the ship in time?

We plan the day so you are on the quay a full hour or more before all-aboard time. The walk itself is the only variable, and the staff at the gate keep groups moving at a steady pace.

Can we shower or change after the walk?

There are no showers at El Chorro. Most passengers carry a fresh T-shirt in a small bag, which the driver keeps in the car, and change in a café's toilets before returning to the ship.

What if the Caminito is closed on our port day?

Bad weather, mainly gusty wind or a downpour, can shut the walkway. If that happens we will offer an alternative such as Nerja or Mijas for your call, or you can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before.
